Hey Colin,

Not sure I agree with your assesment on Cammy. Why would he resign and hope Burke will explore trade options for him when he has total control at seasons end with regards to where he goes? Why would he give up the power to choose?

I do wonder if the Flames can get anything at all in trading his neg rights before the draft. Probably not.

I think the biggest reason, is because Cammy's already moved around a fair bit in his career, and the place where he's had the most success has been here in Calgary. For some reason, he just seems to fit into this city and this organization. I can see him signing a 3-4 year deal similar to the Stajan contract, although likely about a million higher.

Word out of Colorado re: Stastny is that he's more than willing to sign a hometown discount to stick around. I don't think we'll see him hit the open market.

Colin, do you not see Wotherspoon as having a starting job next season? I think he's looked pretty solid back there.

Good blog, Colin! The only thing I don't agree with is Billins being with the big club next season. I think Wotherspoon stands a better chance. He's a bigger guy and if Billins were on the team, there would be 3 of the same (essentially) players on the team (Brodie, Russell, Billins).I like what I've seen from Wotherspoon and think he'll stick around after camp next season.

And with that you posted that you forgot him...

Ahh... good stuff. I was worried you might be seeing him differently than I have.

Honestly? Because I think that he and Burke will work out a contract that he says "will be in Mike's best interest", but will leave the Flames the opportunity to trade him later. In other words, a cap friendly contract, shorter term, and no NTC.

Burke is a business man, remember this.

At this point, Ortio might even be the starter.

I think there will be a limited NTC. Mike will want some say in where he goes should it come down to a trade situation.

Another UFA that I'd be interested in were he to hit the open market would be Ryan Callahan. Perfect fit for the type of team that we're building here, and I think it's just a matter of dollars to get him.

See, I would agree, however argue that he's not one that will be too interested in joining this organization. Doesn't strike me as the type, personally. That said, would (love) to have a guy like that join the group.

I think he's looking to get paid. If it weren't about the total dollar figure he would have re-signed in NY. That situation was perfect.

I just don't see the incentive to stay. He isn't getting any younger. He's made a lot of cash already. he can take a smaller payday to sign with a potential winner. I am rarely correct when predicting these types of things but to me 2 +2 isn't = 4 in this case.
As well....
with Burkes desire to get bigger, who do you keep.
Cammy
Byron
Gaudreau
Hudler
all very small players and is there room for all of them?

Another guy I'd make a call about would be Setoguchi... RW that can put the puck in the net, and he's local so he might be willing to come for cheap.

I gave him a big PASS. He's not a guy who makes others around him better...typically shines when paired with a complimentary type player. There are more guys like that around who could be acquired for less.

Despite being the smallest guy on the ice, Byron sure doesn't play like it... Hudler I think would be a perfect guy to move at the draft to add a couple more picks to the mix.

Burke doesnt want to lose an asset. No way no how. And for him, re-signing the player is his only option. That said, he will be doing so with the primary goal of moving him later on, and Cammy will know this, too.

He's definitely not a top tier guy, but he's a good complementary piece. I like him better than Jones on that right side.

Id rather give a few younger guys who will work to EARN that role, than throwing money at a guy like Seto...tbh.
